With Respect to ‘Respect’

A lot of people are saying we all need to respect the office of the presidency, even if we don’t like the man. I respect the office. I also respect police officers and teachers. But when any of them act like a bully, a jerk, or against the best interest of the public they serve, they lose the privilege of my respect.

Yes, Americans should all respect the office of the presidency. It’s unfortunate that 63 million voters did not when they cast their vote for a man who is clearly undeserving of that respect in every sentence he utters and decision he makes.  Read More

It won’t take long for the Republican congress to use every trick in the book to defund, defang, and repeal The Affordable Care Act. The only question is, what comes next. President-elect Donald Trump and his GOP cohorts promise something wonderful. But the devil is in the details. And so far, all they are offering is a spit-polished version of the old, broken system we had pre-Obamacare. In other words, they’re promising nothing.

And the biggest “nothing” in their fantasy plan is Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).

The Problem Isn’t Our Candidates

I keep hearing the same forlorn complaint: “Why do we have such bad candidates this year? Why must we choose between the lesser of two evils?” But the truth is, our 2016 presidential candidates are not any worse than ever before.

Donald Trump, for all his personal peccadillos, is no worse on policy than Mitt Romney, who also promised anti-choice judges and a repeal of Obamacare, wanted to press immigrants to self-deport, and proposed tax cuts just as massive and just as onerous as Trump’s. And they are both just as recklessly hawkish and just as wealth-gap enabling as John McCain or George W. Bush. Take out Trump’s antipathy for trade deals (one of his few plusses), and you could line up all their policy positions in a spreadsheet and not be able to tell who belongs to which column.

Hillary Clinton, for all the GOP-inspired caricature myths about her trustworthiness and cozy relationship with Wall St., is very much in line politically and temperamentally with previous nominees Barack Obama, John Kerry, Al Gore, and Michael Dukakis. Read More
