“Single Payer” Myths from Left and Right

by D.J. McGuire Amidst the wailing, gnashing of teeth, celebrations, and everything in between because the United States Senate has – literally – voted to let itself keep voting on health insurance today, I thought it might be a good idea to address some of the problematic myths surrounding the “single-payer” idea. To hear American...

A Better Deal for the Bernie Base

by Kevin Kelton It has been my experience (and probably yours, too) that most people can never take ownership of their bad life decisions. Bosses never call up up to say they were wrong to fire you. Former girlfriends/boyfriends never admit the breakup was a mistake. Drivers never accept fault in an accident. Police officers...

Jeff Sessions Brings Back Federal For-Profit Police with Return to No-Charge Civil Asset Forfeiture

by D.J. McGuire Amidst the whirl and rush over Donald Trump’s latest temper tantrum to The New York Times, I want to be sure the latest action by Attorney General Jeff Sessions (ironically, one of Trump’s targets) did not go unnoticed – because it’s not good (from the Washington Post).

Alliance for Securing Democracy: We Need More of This

McGuire Listeners to our podcast know that when the subject of Russia comes up, I’m the one trying desperately to ensure at least some bandwith goes to discussion about the Putinist threat to American interests, human rights, and democracy beyond just attempts to impeach Donald Trump. I’ve tried to make that case here, too. So, naturally,...

My Further Thoughts on Freer Markets and the Democratic Party

by D.J. McGuire A couple of days after my post on where the modern center is for Democrats, many within the party seemed to confuse my preference for freer markets with support for “the Wall Street elite.” My previous post discussed neither Wall Street nor the economic “elite,” which clearly led a lot of folks on...

Join us for debate and discussion on OPEN FIRE!

The Facebook group, Open Fire (politics), was co-founed by Jeff Penn and Kevin Kelton in 2014. Our modest goal was to create a forum for civil, intelligent political discussions – not the vulgar verbal mud-wrestling we were seeing in other debate groups. Our mantra is to debate with honor, not debase with insults. Today, with 11,000 members spanning the political spectrum, we have a bigger ambition: to become a relevant, powerful voice in national politics. We hope to achieve that by leveraging social media, expanding our footprint, and partnering with other groups to magnify our voice. We hope you’ll join us in that lofty goal. So please join the group, read our Guidelines, and jump in. Let’s make the citizen voice count.
